The Resurrection in a Capital B

1508
Manuscript illumination on parchment
Aargauer Kantonsbibliothek, MsMurf 3 (Pontificale Murense), fol. 11v

Typical of Western images of the Resurrection, Christ has emerged from the sepulcher with his standard and red-cross pennon while a soldier leans against it and sleeps. As usual, he wears a mantle over an almost naked body, and his five wounds are all visible.

A pontificale is a book prescribing the forms for rituals performed by a bishop.
